Rugged Reliability: Why Rex Specs Stand the Test of Time

June 06, 2024 Written by: Hannah Moore

Whether your dog is tearing it up on the trails, retrieving birds on the hunt, loading up in a helicopter on the job, or taking their evening stroll through the neighborhood, choosing gear designed to keep them safe can make all the difference. That’s where Rex Specs leads the pack with gear that offers unparalleled protection.

What Makes Rex Specs Gear Tougher Than Most?

Our gear is created with you and your dog in mind, no matter what your walk of life is. From goggles to leashes and collars, Rex Specs products are designed thoughtfully with high quality materials, meticulously constructed, and rigorously tested to ensure they can withstand even the toughest adventures.

Breaking it Down: Goggles

Featuring a shatterproof polycarbonate lens and a flexible, durable frame, Rex Specs goggles are designed specifically for protecting the eyes of our canine companions.

  • Robust Frame: Crafted with a rugged, durable frame made from a thermoplastic elastomer, Rex Specs are designed to withstand impact and provide a comfortable fit. The frame also features a ventilation system that prevents fogging and allows for proper air circulation.
  • Patented Strap System: The straps on Rex Specs are made from heavy-duty elastic and feature reinforced stitching at key stress points. This prevents the straps from fraying or breaking, even with frequent adjustments and use, and allows your dog to have a complete range of motion with their mouth.
  • Safety-Rated Lenses: Rex Specs lenses offer 99.9% UV protection, and are made from shatterproof polycarbonate - the same material used in safety goggles and ballistic-rated eyewear for humans. This makes them impact resistant and ensures that they won’t crack or break. Rex Specs lenses have also passed the ANSI Z87.1 and MIL Specification Testing.

ANSI Z87.1 and MIL-PRF-32432 Rated

To ensure your dog’s safety, Rex Specs goggles have been tested against the safety standards for human protective eyewear.

The ANSI Z87.1 rating tests the impact resistance of the eyewear. This test involves shooting a quarter-inch steel ball at the lens at speeds of up to 150 feet per second. The lens must withstand the impact without cracking, fracturing, or dislodging from the frame. The MIL-SPEC testing for eyewear is similar to the ANSI Z87.1 test, but it involves shooting a steel projectile at the lens at a higher speed of up to 640 feet per second. The eyewear must also pass a penetration test, where the projectile cannot pass through the lens or the frame.

MIL-SPEC Test:

Passing the high-velocity impact portions of both the ANSI Z87.1 and MIL Spec tests, Rex Specs have earned their Z87.1 certification and MIL-PRF-32432 rating.

Breaking it Down: Collars and Leashes

From one-of-a-kind features like parallel leash attachment points to weather resistant and stink proof materials, Rex Specs collars and leashes are crafted to withstand work and adventuring.

  • Unique Features: The Rex Specs Trailhead Series boasts a sturdy, reinforced parallel attachment point for your dog’s leash that doesn’t sacrifice the durability of the collar and remains as strong as a standard dee ring leash attachment. Trailhead Leashes are made with heavy duty stitched daisy chains that turn a simple leash into a jack of all trades.
  • Durable Materials: Made from high quality materials including weather resistant and waterproof Brahma Webb, water resistant English and Bridle leathers, and strong, woven nylon, Rex Specs leashes and collars will withstand even the harshest terrains. These materials also stand up to heavy pullers and dogs who are hard on their gear.
  • High Quality Hardware: Rex Specs leashes and collars feature strong and sturdy buckles and hardware made of anodized aluminum, heavy-duty titanium, and lightweight, durable plastic. This hardware ensures that your dog’s leashes will stay secured to their collars, and their collars will stay clipped.

Pull Strength Testing

All Rex Specs leashes and collars are tested using a pull test machine during the development process, to ensure they are as safe as possible for any adventure you take your dog on.

A pull test machine is a device designed to measure the strength of a material or the integrity of a joint or connection by subjecting it to tension until it fails. In pull testing, a sample is gradually pulled apart until it reaches its breaking point, and the force required to cause failure is measured. For example, in the case of testing a collar, the pull test machine would apply force to the collar until it breaks, and the amount of force, typically measured in pounds (lbs) or newtons (N), required to cause the failure is recorded. This helps in assessing the quality and durability of the collar and provides valuable information for quality control and product development processes.
